Busted

Cody has always been a restless sleeper, but we became concerned about his restlessness several weeks ago after arriving back from Nanna and Pap’s house. Cody began falling out of his bed that week. In fact, one night I counted about 5 or 6 falls. We began to wonder if maybe he had gotten accustomed to sleeping in the bigger bed at Nanna and Pap’s house and had to adjust back to his bed. At one point, though, Shawn became suspicious that it was all an act. The timing and frequency of the falls made Shawn skeptical. Cody also would request that I come up to comfort him on times when Shawn went up to check things out……Apparently, I am the more sensitive one in these times (or maybe I should say gullible!) One night Shawn had a talk with Cody about not faking falling out of the bed for sympathy. I expressed to Shawn that I felt badly for Cody if these falls were genuine accidents, and we were just telling him to “stop pretending.” Shawn, the skeptical one, just said that he was “not buying it.” SO yesterday at naptime I heard Cody talking in his room. I walked up to see what he was doing. I opened his door, but he had his back to me. He slid down from his bed, and I assumed he was coming downstairs to see me. Instead, he laid himself on the floor, took time to adjust himself, and then began to whimper. He never saw me at the door, so I walked up to him, and he says to me in his most pitiful sounding voice, “Mommy, I fell out of bed.” I couldn’t believe it! Shawn was right, and I had been fooled!
