Not Quite "Perfect"……And That’s Okay!

A few nights ago, Cody came to me and showed me his name written on a doodle pro. This was done in lower-case letters which we have been learning recently. I asked him if Daddy helped him, and he told me “no.” He was so proud. Then the next day he showed me how he wrote it, and I couldn’t believe how EFFORTLESS it was for him! Not the fact that he WROTE the letters (because he is a very smart boy), but it was more the fact that he was able to finally lay aside all perfectionist tendencies he has and was able to freely write those letters and see them as beautifully written as they were. It used to be he would become frustrated and tell me he messed up whenever he attempted to write something (or even draw certain things) because he felt it did not look “perfect” like all the letters in the books. But this time was different. He actually ENJOYED writing, and he didn’t seem to worry at all about whether the letters were formed just so. That night he sat with Shawn and asked Shawn to teach him how to write other letters he did not know how to write yet. Shawn got a book to show him, and he had so much fun attempting this. He picked it up so quickly. Yesterday he sat down with his Cars doodle pro that Grandpa got him and began writing his name in capital and lower-case letters all by himself. He wrote Anna, Mommy, Daddy, Cat, Tigger, and then wanted to write more! He was ecstatic about all he found he could write. It is so wonderful to see Cody enjoying these things. Shawn has commented in the past that he feels sorry for Cody because of his perfectionist ways (Shawn also has those tendencies, so he can relate). I have been praying that God would help Cody be able to be at peace and enjoy efforts he makes in life even if it doesn’t go quite the way he’d like, even if it’s not quite “perfect.” He has such a fascinating mind and a fun personality that it is hard to watch him critique himself so. Watching Cody write those letters and words this week brought so much joy to my heart. It was great to see him acknowledging how FANTASTIC all his letters looked! Sweet victory!
