Pinewood Derby

Shawn and Cody participated in their first pinewood derby competition the other week for Awana’s. Cody was so excited to design their car! He even chose the colors orange and black to paint his new vehicle…also the colors of his bicycle. He was so proud and couldn’t wait to get to the race on the big day. The only problem was Shawn had been so busy coaching Cody’s soccer team on Saturday game days that he missed the weigh-in and workshop days that were available. He told me on the way there that if the car was too heavy he would just drill some wood out. Well, we got to the race. There was such a long line for registering. I sat with the kids for so long. The competition was just about to start. And then I heard it…drilling! Oh, no! My heart sank a little for him and for Cody. It took a little, okay A LOT, of drilling, but Cody’s car was now fit to race! Cody had fun. There was cake and hot dogs and fun times with friends. Cody didn’t win a trophy that day but instead got a ribbon. As you can see he didn’t have first, second, or third place on his mind that day. He was so pleased with his participation ribbon. We even had to back track on our way to the car because Cody dropped his ribbon along the way. A lady inside had it, and Cody was smiling as he received it again. He told us, “Phew! I’m so glad I found my ribbon!”

Children are so sweet! I think, though, we will do things a little differently next year, plan a little better. A little less last minute sweating it out and panic would be happily accepted by Shawn. Oh, memories!
