Leave and Cleave

Tonight as we were getting ready to meet some friends for dinner and games, Anna asked me (she was admiring my growing tummy with her baby brother or sister inside), “Mommy, will I have a baby some day?” I said, “Maybe.” She asked me when that would be…

Me: “Well, when you get older you will find the man that God wants you to marry, and then you might have a baby of your own.”

Anna: “How do I get married?”

Me: “You find the man God wants you to marry, fall in love, and then one day he asks you to marry him. You plan a wedding, invite your friends and family to watch you get married, and a pastor will marry you.”

Anna was soaking it all in when Cody, from the other room, voices his thoughts, “Then will we leave home?”

I said to them both, “Yes, you will live then with your husband or wife.”

Cody broke down in tears, and Anna was holding back crocodile tears of her own. Cody asked more questions and tried to figure out the time frame of all of this but still couldn’t contemplate EVER wanting to be without his Mom or Dad. In the end he tearfully says, “But I want to live with you forever!”

Soooo, for now Cody and Anna think they can live with their parents, along with their spouses, for as long as they like. (smile) Some day, though, I imagine they will feel differently, and I imagine Shawn will totally not go for that, but…for now…
