School Closings

We had our first snow day last week.  You know, the kind where you call off school for the whole day.  I told Shawn I have a love/hate relationship with snow days, especially the first one of the year.  There is always, without fail, someone who is missing the pair to their mittens, or a hat, or something.  Then, poor Cody, I rarely think ahead and buy the bigger boots and snowsuit before the first snowfall, so he is trying to readjust straps and make his hiking boots work in place of snow boots.  And then there is just the simple fact that it is snow gear, and it’s bulky, and it’s hot, and it’s awkward.  I actually found myself telling the kids, “Well, it’s snow gear.  It’s not going to feel like pajamas.”  But then I take them to the school in our neighborhood that has the big sledding hill, and I remember why snow days are so fun.  Taking turns sledding with each child brings me pure joy.  Racing my eleven year old to the bottom of the hill and almost colliding at the bottom, no matter how hard I try to shift my weight, brings us to great laughter.  And I love it.  So I’ll take a few more snow days this winter.  The school books can wait.
